SMTP Setup Instructions

Our campus-wide smtp.uci.edu server has been decommissioned due to security concerns, and it is part of the ESMail migration, so sending emails from math.uci.edu, ess.uci.edu, chem.uci.edu, and physics.uci.edu is not working.

OIT supported smtp.uci.edu was retired as per the timeline in https://www.oit.uci.edu/org/projects/es-mail-retirement/#tabs|2

We use @math.uci.edu for our example, but you will do the same steps for @ess.uci.edu, @physics.uci.edu, and @chem.uci.edu

You need a UCI Gmail account first. If you do not have one, create one at: https://googleapps.es.uci.edu/signup/index.php

FOR THUNDERBIRD:

Step 1: Add your UCI Gmail account with the settings as follows (You must do this first for authentication in step 2 to work):

Server Type: IMAP

  • Server name: imap.gmail.com
  • Port: 993
  • Connection security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication method: OAuth2
  • User name: ucinetid@uci.edu

Server Type: SMTP

  • Server name: smtp.gmail.com
  • User name: ucinetid@uci.edu
  • Connection security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication method: OAuth2

Step 2:

Edit your @math.uci.edu account settings

Replace whatever you see in <> (including the <>) with your own information.

  • Your incoming mail server will be as follows:
    Hostname/Server: psa.ps.uci.edu
    Port: 993
    Security: SSL/TLS
    Authentication: Normal Password
Username: <The part of your email before the @>
    Password: <Your math email password>

  • Under the account settings, change your outgoing server (labeled SMTP in some cases) to the following settings:
  • Hostname/Server: smtp.gmail.com
    Port: 465
    Security: SSL/TLS
    Authentication: Oauth2
    Username: <USE YOUR UCINETID HERE>@uci.edu

FOR APPLE MAIL:
